In an earlier <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ziprecruiter.com\/blog\/unemployment-benefits-by-state\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we described those changes and explained what they meant for benefits in each state.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One notable change was the addition of a $600 weekly federal supplement to unemployment benefits early in the pandemic, which has since been replaced by a $300 weekly supplement that ended on September 6, 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that Americans are getting vaccinated, Covid cases are falling, the economy is reopening, and economic activity is picking up, employer demand for workers is rebounding. Job openings <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/jolts.nr0.htm\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reached<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an all-time record high 9.3 million in April, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some observers, like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/05\/07\/us-chamber-of-commerce-rips-300-jobless-benefit-calls-for-repeal.html\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">argue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the expanded employment benefits could discourage unemployed Americans from returning to the workforce. Several politicians have blamed the extra federal payments for contributing to hiring challenges around the country.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On May 4, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte announced that he would opt out of federal unemployment benefits early and convert the funds into reemployment bonuses for people who return to work. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster soon announced that he would be canceling federal unemployment programs early, too.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other states followed suit.
